Around the World |
The world is a big place Traveling has any number of benefits. It helps put things in perspective, gives new appreciation and insight, has some fantastic food... the list is endless. I've been to 75/200ish countries (see definitions below) and all 50 US states (plus 4 of 6 US territories)... and counting. A selection of photos from (many of) these trips can be found on my social media. List of Countries
Map of Countries What's In a Name? Country: It might sound like a silly question, but good luck answering it. For purposes of this webpage only, I take an approach that's half art, half science: Considering things like, does a place have an ISO-3166 country code? Does it claim (or disclaim) being a country? Is that claim generally consistent with the totality of context? This means that more than one non-independent entity like (for example) Sint Maarten are counted, as are some that may be disputed, but excludes (for example) the constituent parts of the UK or Puerto Rico. I take no position [in this forum] as to the validity of any claim one way or the other; this is a matter of personal trivia, not a manifesto. Visit: A particular geographic region is considered to be "visited" when some sort of activity not related to onward/through travel occurs in the geographic region thereof. There are, at time of writing, four (4) countries which I've transited, but do not consider myself to have visited: Brazil, Ethiopia, Japan, and South Korea. U.S. State/Territory: U.S. law is clear on the 50 states; it is surprisingly ambiguous - if not discrepant - as to what constitutes a territory. For my purposes, I'm including those with a permanent population that are entitled to send a delegate to Congress. This excludes the 326 Indian reservations and a vast number of uninhabited (and, in some cases, disputed) islands in the middle of the ocean. Endorsements Although I hold certain preferences (some rather strongly) with respect to locations, airlines, or other travel providers, I do not formally endorse any. This is because (a) you almost certainly don't care, (b) what's right for me and my circumstances, may or may not be right for you and your circumstances, and (c) I'm not about free advertising. | |||||||
